I like to shop at Trader Joe’s in Union Square. Despite the crazy crowds, narrow aisles, and long lines- the prices are great, the food is quality, and they sell $3 bottles of wine in the wine shop next door. So about twice a month I take my granny cart, schlep up to Union Square, and face the madness to stock up.
Well, yesterday, as per my usual routine, I picked up three bottles of TJ’s three buck chuck before continuing on to the grocery store for the rest of my essentials (Yes, wine is an essential). I had the cashier start by loading my groceries into the space leftover in the wine shop bag and the rest went into two more bags, all stacked in my granny cart, all lugged back to my apartment.
Once I got home and had all the perishables put away I took a break, read some blogs, and ate my lunch (grocery shopping makes me hungry). When I came back to unpacking, I found a name brand bottle of wine at the bottom of my grocery bag.
What? I don’t remember buying that, maybe it was mixed in with the cases of three buck chuck and I picked it up by accident? I checked my receipt, nope, just three bottles of TJ’s. Hmmm… I went back to the bag to finish unpacking and as I took the next bottle out of its sleeve I saw that it was Prosecco. What?
At this point I started laughing. Did they give me the wrong bag? Then I saw my three bottles of store brand wine, but wait… yet ANOTHER bottle of “fancy stuff”. By this point I was completely perplexed.
I have no idea how this happened. In the rush and crowds of TJ’s, I just keep my bag in the granny cart and roll on out. Maybe the person ahead of me ordered delivery and they loaded my cheap wine into that persons delivery ready bag? Regardless, what I’m more concerned with is what do I do now?
Do I schlep those three bottles back to Trader Joe’s? It’s not terribly far, but it’s a walk (with store time, at least a 45 minute trip).
Will I get the cashier who checked me out in trouble? Will Trader Joe’s just tell me to keep the wine anyway?
Maybe my moral compass is askew, but I really don’t feel like taking these bottles back. What do you think? Have you ever had an error in your favor? What did you do?
UPDATE: I returned the extra bottles to Trader Joe’s wine shop this afternoon. I’m feeling a mix of emotions. I did the right thing, but I had to go out of my way and take my time to right someone else’s mistake. Oh, TJ’s, it’s a good thing I love you.
